hit the road jack!

GOODBYE bili blanket!!! HELLO cuddle time!!! oh, how wonderful yesterday evening was just holding jake, letting him fall asleep in our arms, and not having to worry about "him being asleep...we've got to put him back on the light." his jaundice level was 11.8. good enough for dr. chea to release him from the bili blanket. we still have to let him lay in the sun for 10 minutes every hour. we can handle that. the other news we found out yesterday was that jake has acid reflux. so he's on some medicine three times a day for that. i discussed with dr. chea that he just couldn't stomach the 3 oz. that he's supposed to be eating by now. he can only handle anywhere from 2 oz - 2.5 oz. at each feeding time. so i had charted how much he spit up and ate at each feeding and she agreed that he just can't eat that much yet. (and that's also how we figured out that he had acid reflux.) but she was okay with that because he is gaining weight (7 lbs. now....yipee) and is looking good. we don't have to go back to see dr. chea for 2 weeks and that will be his one month check-up and his next hep. b shot.

next tuesday we're going to the occupational therapist for oral/feeding issues. he is not getting enough to eat from by breast, but sure can get enough through the bottle. so the lactation specialist said that he's a "muncher" meaning that he only sucks up and down...he doesn't pull back on the nipple in order to get enough milk. he also is not opening his mouth wide enough...which is why breastfeeding was so incredibly painful for me. (i'm pumping and feeding it to him with a bottle...which is extremely exhausting...but atleast he's getting breast milk) so, they say that this lady, kathy, works wonders. she'll have his problem figured out in about 5 minutes of evaluation and it will only take about 2-3 visits to get him breastfeeding correctly. we'll see. but for now, i'm just ready for all these little issues to "hit the road jack and don't ya come back no more, no more, no more, no more!!!!"

  1. I know what you are talking about with breastfeeding it has been a struggle for me from the beginning because I am not producing enough. I have tried all the herbs and a prescription medicine and still am only pumping 1&1/2oz. It has been mentally and emotionally draining and there is nothing else I can do to increase my milk according to the lactation consultants. I just started to wean her off of breast milk today I just can't handle it emotionally anymore! I pray Jake is able to suck better. Lily is eating 3 oz and last week when we took her to the doctor she weighed 7lb 6oz. It is hard to believe how fast they grow.

  2. Yay for the jaundice getting better! Whoohooo!

I exclusively pumped for three months with Maggie...so much work but it was worth it. You will get the routine down. And, then Josh can take over a middle of the night feeding while you rest an hour (or two) more before you pump. That is the upside of pumping. =) So glad that things are looking better for all of you. Still praying for you.
